I chaired the monthly Legislative Contract Review Meeting at 8:30. For the first time in memory we were unable to complete the agenda in the time frame allowed as the House went into session and the Senate had committee meetings. We finished about half of the agenda and carried over the remaining contracts. I plan to hold another meeting next week to take up review of the remaining contracts.
The Senate went into session at 10:00 this morning and after some procedural work took up the Prison Reform Bill, SB67. A majority of the day was devoted to debating this legislation and numerous amendments were adopted. I commend the Prison Reform Committee for their months of work on this legislation and feel that we are on the right track for not only addressing prison overcrowding but conducting sentencing reforms as well. Prisons and Medicaid reforms have been priorities of this legislature as they continue to consume significant portions of our General Fund Budget.
The Senate adjourned for the week at 5 PM. We will return to session next Tuesday at 2 PM. I’m excited to have a lot of people from North Alabama visiting Montgomery next week as we will be celebrating Alabama Aerospace Week at the Capitol. This is an expansion of NASA Week that we started several years ago to showcase to the impact of the Aerospace Industry to the rest of our state. Many activities and outreach programs are planned by members of industry and Marshall Space Flight Center.
I hope everyone enjoys spending time with family and friends this weekend and especially on Easter Sunday as we celebrate, for He has risen!
