I just finished a thorough review of a 22 page bill in preparation for a meeting in the morning. The bill that I’m working on targets (can I still use that word…) multiple offense drunk drivers - requiring the use of an ignition interlock device. Installation and lease of the device is borne by the offender. More on that another day.
I arrived in Montgomery a little before 10 am and immediately went to a Republican Senate Caucus meeting. Several discussion topics in the meeting but two that are now public:
1. We are not locking down the Senate Floor of the State House. No one’s access has been or will be restricted in anyway.
2. The Caucus determined it would support a pro-ration of Senate legislative pay in budgets we pass. In other words, should the budget we pass in this session - for 2012 - be prorated by a hypothetical 5% then the Senate legislative pay would be automatically prorated by 5%.
Lt Gov Ivey called the 2011 session to order promptly at noon. My wife and daughter, Abby, along with Campaign Manager and key supporters during the 2010 campaign - Ted, Danny, and Lee - were able to attend today’s session. Very special having them here today and I truly appreciate everyone's hard work in helping to send me to Montgomery!
After attending several other meetings throughout the afternoon I attended the “State of the State” speech by Gov. Bentley this evening. You can view the full text of his speech here.
You can view the proposed budgets on the Alabama Legislative Information System Online. Once at the website click on “Bills” and then “Status”. Enter the bill number and click “Get Status”. The Education Budget is SB121 and the General Fund Budget is SB133. Click on the “box” with the bill number in it and then click on “View” (top of screen to the right), the document will open in another window in a PDF format for viewing. I am on the General Fund Committee. This is the budget document we will start working from in committee.
I also have two bills submitted thus far – SB89 and SB98. SB89 concerns education benefits for veterans and SB98 addresses emergency contracting by the state. I’m currently working on and have co-sponsored several other bills.
All for now – it’s “tomorrow” and I’ve got that meeting at 0830 and am suppose to call in to The Dale Jackson Show around 7:30.
