Senator Dale Marsh was elected as the President Pro Temp of the Senate for the quadrennial. Readers may recall that he was elected as Pro Temp during the Special Session but all organizational actions for that session expired when the Special Session adjourned.
We adopted rules for the quadrennial – from what I’ve studied there are no real surprises here. Increased transparency due to the flow of bills in and out of committees will be key.
Committee assignments were made. As a retired Marine I’m honored to be the Chair of Veterans and Military Affairs Committee. I’ll be very busy though as I’ll serve on a total of 8 committees. Other membership assignments include:
- Banking and Insurance
- Children, Youth Affairs and Human Resources
- Commerce, Transportation and Utilities
- Education Policy
- Finance and Taxation General Fund
- Small Business and Economic Development
- Local Legislation No. 4 (first time this local legislative committee has been formed)
I drove to Montgomery last night, slipping and sliding from Madison through Cullman after the 8 inches of snow we received across North Alabama. Road conditions greatly improved after passing through Cullman and it was smooth sailing from Birmingham south. I opted to drive my small car to Montgomery (it is over 10 years old and has 100K miles on it…almost “disposable” at this point) and on I-565 literally plowed the road; I was not the first car to drive on the road but I could tell that I was the first car that low to the ground to drive on I-565 as I could hear the snow pass underneath my car.
We will hold a joint session tomorrow with the House to adopt the Joint Rules for the Senate and House.
Final note from today – the Senate passed a resolution commending the Auburn Tigers as the BCS National Champs. Lt Gov. Folsom accepted “War Eagle” as an affirmative vote...Loved it!
